Somewhere

July 24, 1944

 Dearest Mother, Dad, & Velma;

             Received two letters from you yesterday and I was really amazed at the places you thought I might be.  Remember, Mom, I fly a fighter and their range is not compared to a bomber’s.  Besides this time you thought I was stationed in places that we aren’t even close to.  You are right as to where Jack Mullins is and I am right close by.

             We had one of the heaviest rains last might I have ever seen.  Nearly12 inches in about an hour.  I got a little wet but I am used to that.

             Just received the reports of April 16 – D-day.  It was very interesting – I had often wondered how they would play it up.  The news in Europe is better all the time.  I believe & hope that show will be over fairly soon.

             Well, it is fact they are going to form the new squadron.  It will be about three weeks yet.  Capt. Dunham of 342nd will be my new C.O. and he has been a very good friend of mine since we were first organized.  He told me I would get a promotion and get a flight.  Morrison and I will be in there together.  It will be a good while before I get back but I have no control over that.  I can only hope & pray it will be soon.

             I think I’ll get to go on leave this week so I can be back in time to help organize the new squadron.  If I don’t , I may not get a leave for quite some time.

             Well, Mom, this is about all for now.  Write often and tell Thelma & Kat to write too.  By the way, Dad, what kind of competition is Fred Goad?

             I am O.K. so don’t worry.

                                                                                                 All my love,

                                                                                                 Son
