Somewhere!
(Author's note: On May 22nd the 348th F.G. moved
from Saidor, New Guinea to Wakde Island.)
Dearest Mother & Dad,
I imagine you will be very glad to hear from me when you get this. I am sorry I couldn’t write sooner, but I can’t tell you why, you’ll just have to guess. We have moved and I am now out of New Guinea and am on another island. It is much hotter here and the living conditions, along with dead Japs is pretty poor. The landing strip is pretty good and it has Nip airplanes all over it.
I have been O.K. til today but I think I worked too hard yesterday putting up our tent. We are living on the ground and believe me, it is plenty rough. Nothing to eat but ”K” rations and that is pretty bad. Flying conditions aren’t bad at all. We are close to the Nips and don’t have to fly so long now. I have in my 300 hours now but that doesn’t mean much. I have just been told that I am to be put in a new squadron that is being formed as a flight leader. I’ll probably get a captaincy out of it, but I don’t care for it. The job is being pushed on me but I had rather go home. I didn’t have any choice in the matter, however So, it will probably Xmas before I get home. Don’t worry, Mom, and use my old APO 321 until you find out differently.
Love,
Son
